DSR Supercharged Integra type R
"Designed for demanding enthusiasts, the type
R combines a lightweight design with high-performance
components creating an Integra of unprecedented power
and response." -Honda Motor Co. 1998
Off the showroom floor the Integra Type R will accelerate
to 60mph in approximately 6.2 seconds and run the quarter
mile in approximately 15.1 seconds. However, these
outstanding straight line performance numbers only make up a
small aspect of this machines abilities. Being on any type of
racetrack is where most of the type R's performance
stands out.
When the Integra Type R made its first debut in the
United States in 1997-98, Championship White was the only exterior
color offered. In 2000-01 the original color was discontinued
and black and yellow became the only colors offered.
After 2001, the Type R was never
to be sold again in the US again. Options such as A/C (offered at standard
in '00-01), sunroof, sound deadening and most all
other creature comforts were left out. The Type R instead received a stronger
frame, larger and more pronounced front and rear spoilers,
close ratio gearing, lighter flywheel, stiffened clutch,
high performance suspension, limited-slip differential,
larger brakes with a 5-lug bolt pattern, light weight
wheels, race inspired black seats with red stitching, carbon
look interior components and a numbered plaque which
revealed its limited edition status and model number.
The heart of the car is still the engine. This
is where Honda did its homework and made it hard for
consumers to make improvements. Seeking to build this the type R's engine
Honda turned to its Formula 1 department. The end result was a 1.8L VTEC engine
designed to rev up to 8400rpm and made 195hp. The handmade engine
included a hand polished intake manifold and intake ports. To assist the new high-lift camshafts,
lightweight intake valves and twin coil valve springs with an oval cross-section were added.
To reduce the engines rotational weight and increase the rev-ability, lightweight connecting rods
and low friction/ high compression pistons were used.
To finish the motor off, a high
volume air intake and high flow exhaust system was added
to give the type R motor that extra edge.
However, all this handbuilt technology came at a cost.
Only a scarce 1341 white type R's came to the US for 1997-98.
For 2000-01 the amount of yellow and black type R's remains unknown.
Of the 1341 white type R's which came to the US in 1998,
#717 fell into the hands of DSR and this is where our
story starts.
When Dynospot came into the life of type R #717
the owner Mike Marsey, was looking for a shop to fix problems
several other shops caused. Installed on the car at that time was a Jackson
Racing supercharger, a few basic intake and exhaust
items and an array of "band-aid" devices,
which in our eyes, didn't appear to work. From past testing, type R'a bone stock
will typically put out 160-170whp with 117lb-ft of torque.
A stock JR supercharger kit on a type R typically puts out
180whp and 130lb-ft torque. However, in this case, even
with the supercharger and several bolt-on items it put out a jaw
dropping 160whp and 116lb-ft torque! Almost less then a stock setup!!!
At that point, we realized the customers' decision to find a shop that could
fix his problems and properly tune the car was a good
idea.
so we knew we had a long way to go to search out all
the problems with the car. Over the next 3+ years Dynospot
embarked on a mission to fix and tune this supercharged
type R to make as much power as possible.
As of Dec 2002, this customers type R boasted an amazing 273whp (updated)
with 190lb-ft of torque (updated).

Of course, this power wasn't fully achieved from just fixing problems
and tuning the ECU. It was due to the selection of
appropriate parts that would enhance the overall potential of the engine.
The engine's setup currently includes a Jackson Racing
supercharger with an custom boost upgrade pulley, cold air intake
system, 3" free flow exhaust system with a 4-1
exhaust manifold, larger fuel injectors, stronger clutch,
and a custom tuned proprietary DSR ECU. During early testing the
DSR supercharged type R has achieved an amazing 12.5sec
@ 114mph (updated) in the quarter mile with little traction which gives new 996 turbo
Porsches and Vipers a run for their money. However,
DSR is still not finished with this monster. Were still
in the process of doing additional dyno testing to extract
even more power out of this car, as well as were are
still in the process of doing more drag and track testing.
More information on the car's new direction and winning setup will be added soon!
